AI in ProdPad
AI in ProdPad
ProdPad uses generative AI to help you move faster across Ideas, Roadmaps, Objectives, the Product Canvas and Feedback. This article explains what powers it, what data is involved, and how to control it. For a step-by-step guide to a specific feature, see the linked articles below.
Which features use generative AI?
- AI Idea Descriptions & Vision Alignment
- AI-Generated User Stories
- AI-Generated Key Results
- AI in Roadmapping (Initiatives, Initiative descriptions/target outcomes, and AI-generated Ideas)
- AI Canvas Coach
- AI Feedback Summaries
Getting the most out of the AI features
Generative AI tends to give generic, high-level answers when it doesn't have much to work with. Every AI feature in ProdPad builds its context from information already in your account, so the more detail you add, the sharper the output. A few ways to improve results across the board:
- Add a Product Vision. Make sure it clearly describes what your product is trying to achieve. See our blog post on writing a strong product vision if you need a starting point.
- Add a Product Description. Include the type of product (SaaS, IoT, physical, etc.), who it's for (consumer vs. business), the target market, and how it works or is built.
- Link Feedback to Ideas. This is especially valuable for the Idea-related AI features, since it gives the model real end-user context to work from. See linking feedback to an idea.
Keep in mind the underlying models are non-deterministic — you won't necessarily get the same answer twice for the same prompt, even with identical context.
Why does it say "something went wrong"?
This usually comes down to one of two things:
- The AI provider is temporarily overwhelmed and can't fulfil the request, or
- The response that came back was poorly formatted and couldn't be processed.
In either case, wait a moment and try again. If you're seeing this error consistently, contact our support team and we'll dig in.
Does this use ChatGPT?
No. We don't use the ChatGPT application. We use the underlying language models made available via the OpenAI API directly.
What happens to my data?
Nothing is sent automatically. Data is only sent to OpenAI when you actively trigger a generative AI action (e.g. clicking a "Generate with AI" button). These features never send account data in the background.
Exception: if you've opted in to CoPilot via the toggle in Account Settings, it will routinely send Feedback description data for analysis as part of how it works.
Is my data used to train OpenAI's models? No. Since March 2023, OpenAI's use of API data for model training/improvement is opt-in, and we have not opted in. Per OpenAI's API data usage policy, any data sent through the API is retained only for abuse/misuse monitoring, for a maximum of 30 days, then deleted (unless otherwise required by law).
What about Feedback/Idea similarity matching and Signals? These don't use OpenAI at all — they run on language processing models handled entirely within ProdPad's own architecture.
Do you send Personal Identifiable Information (PII)? No, not deliberately:
- The AI Idea description feature only sends the text in the Idea title field.
- The AI User Story feature sends the Idea title, description, feedback description, and the linked Product's vision and description.
- CoPilot only sends Feedback descriptions — never contact name, email, company, location, or other biographic data on the record.
If you want to guarantee no PII reaches these features, keep it out of the Feedback description and Idea title fields specifically.
How do I turn generative AI off?
Go to Account Settings > AI and turn off Enable Generative AI features. This removes AI features for everyone on your ProdPad account, including AI Idea descriptions and Vision alignment, AI User Stories, and AI Key Results.

Generative AI features are enabled by default. You can toggle this on or off at any time from the same settings page.
