How do I develop an idea?

So you have an idea..

But what do you do with it next?

The first step is to figure out what's feasible and what's not. That's when the product manager steps in. It is now their job to figure out:

  • What problem does it solve?
  • Is it worth it?
  • If its a good idea, why haven't we done it sooner?
  • Can we pull it off?

The Business Case

If it ticks all the boxes, it's time to start working on a business caseThis is your chance to capture as much information as you can.

  • Why was the idea suggested?
  • What problem does it solve?
  • What value does it add to your business and clients?

Create user stories to help map out the value and plan. You don't need to have pages and pages of information - but have just the right amount to give the idea enough weight.

Gather customer feedback

So you've decided to build something, that's great. But do your clients need it? This is your chance to gather customer feedback. Be sure to ask if this is valuable or a 'nice to have' feature. Has it been asked for several times before? Are your clients expecting this, or is it a great upgrade opportunity for your business?

Now it's time to prioritize and start building your roadmap. Don't worry about specific dates, rather plan out a more general scope of the direction you want to go on.

Roadmap essentials include:

  • Time Horizons
  • Scope
  • Strategic Initiatives
  • Product Areas/Components
  • One or many products

If you've set up your business case properly, then its delivery should be a seamless experience for both developers and customers. Add mockups, designs, user personas, and any additional details you can think of to ensure that the idea is being understood in all stages of the process.

Acceptance and Success Criteria

Is the work done? How do you know? Most importantly, was it actually successful? Learn to measure success through a variety of channels. If the idea added value for the customer, it goes just beyond answering the question of whether they liked it or not.
