Indicating dependencies between Initiatives

Initiative Dependencies allow you to define relationships between Initiatives, helping you understand how workstreams are connected across products. Whether you're managing cross-functional timelines or coordinating between teams, dependencies help you avoid surprises and communicate blockers early.

To link Initiatives, go to the Initiative Canvas and select the Linked Initiatives tab. Click Link Initiatives and choose from the following relationship types:

  • Blocked by – This Initiative is waiting on another to be completed
  • Blocking – This Initiative is preventing another from progressing
  • Related – Initiatives are connected by theme or topic

Once you select a relationship type, a modal will open allowing you to search and select one or more Initiatives. Click the Confirm button to complete the action.

A success alert will confirm your changes: “Initiatives linked successfully.”

Managing Linked Initiatives

Linked Initiatives appear in the Linked Initiatives tab on the Initiative Canvas. They are grouped by relationship type: Blocking, Blocked by, Related, or Resolved.

Each linked Initiative shows:

  • Relationship icon (colored by type)
  • Initiative title
  • Product name
  • Roadmap column (Candidate, Next, etc.)

Admins and Editors can take additional actions using the menu:

  • Unlink – Remove the relationship
  • Mark as Resolved – For Blocking/Blocked by links only; moves the dependency to the Resolved group

Reviewers can view linked Initiatives but cannot modify them.

Viewing Dependencies on the Roadmap

A dependency counter appears on each Initiative card, showing how many active Blocking/Blocked by relationships exist.

Click the counter to view a popup list of linked Initiatives. Each item is clickable and opens in a side peek for quick access.

You can turn dependency counters on or off by adjusting View Settings and toggling "Linked Initiatives".

  • Expanded and Detailed views: Counters are on by default
  • Collapsed view: Counters are off by default

Linking Initiatives using dependencies gives you clarity over your product development process. You’ll spend less time building manual dependency maps and more time making informed decisions. Use dependencies to improve workflow transparency, communicate roadblocks clearly, and move your initiatives forward with confidence.
